AMATEUR RADIO DONE MY WAY

THE ANTENNA FARM

CONTINUING ON:

On January 31, 2017 I decided to add to my amateur radio equipment so I purchased a used Icom IC-706MKiiG (shown below this text) from Mike (WØZPY). The 706 is a all mode HF-VHF-UHF transceiver. The radio seemed to have a lot of noise on the HF bands when compared to the Yaesu FTdx1200 on the same antennas. After a few months of using it I decided it was going to be delegated to VHF use and monitor 144.200 for band openings and chatting. It was time to order a new transceiver!

I ordered a new Yaesu FT-991A (shown above) from Ham Radio Outlet in June of 2017. I monitor 145.540 simplex and chat with local hams around Waterloo, Grundy Center, Belle Plaine, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Atkins, Vinton & Central City. The memories are all programmed with various 2 meter & 70 cm simplex and repeater frequencies. Because I have had such good success with the Yaesu FT-991A I purchased it's predecessor model FT-991 (shown below) used at a ham fest in Boone, IA for an outstanding price. When I got it home I immediately updated the firmware and you can't hardly tell the two rigs apart. Notice the missing 'A' after the 991.

Many thanks to NØHAN, Mick for giving me a great deal on the used 991 (shown above) in early July of 2019 at the 3900 club Hamboree. This is my mobile rig to take on the road for HF, VHF & UHF not to mention using it on Fusion with a Zumspot when traveling. However, to support my purchase of other equipment I eventually sold the radio to a local ham in Vinton.
